Note – The method described below is actually 'Dead phone USB flashing' so you can also follow this process to flash/reset Nokia phones for reasons other than a lost security code.
It happens frequently that we change the default security code of our phone and then forget the new code. This results in a locked phone and one has to shell out money to Nokia Care/mobile repairing shop to fix the issue. However with a little know-how and following the steps given below you can save some money and most importantly have peace of mind by resetting the security code yourself. Before getting started with the process let's go through the basics and the precautions –
Warning – This process should work for all Nokia mobile phones (Asha, S40, Nokia X, Symbian and Lumia). All phone data (and mass memory data if present) will be lost during the process so backup your important data if possible. Also recharge phone's battery to full (or at least 3/4th) before flashing process. And last but not the least, I am not responsible if anything goes wrong!

Requirements
- A computer running Windows (XP or later)
- Your locked Nokia mobile and its USB data cable
- Phone's firmware (ROM) files – can be downloaded via Navifirm Plus (Update – Navifirm is not working now – read this post to know about it's alternative)
- Nokia Care Suite(NCS) software installed in computer. Better look for and install an older version of Nokia Care Suite (rather than going for the latest one) because Nokia has blocked open access to firmware files in new version of NCS (from May 2013 onwards). You may refer to this post to download and know more about Nokia Care Suite.
Dead phone USB flashing using Nokia Care Suite (to remove Nokia security code)
1. First-up copy the phone firmware files and paste them in C:ProgramDataNokiaPackagesProductsRM-xxx (rename 'xxx' according to your phone type for example it will be RM-596 for Nokia N8) – create the folder RM-xxx if it does not exist at the above location. 2. Now launch Nokia Care Suite in computer – at the launch screen double-click 'Product Support Tool for Store' – a new window will pop up – sign in with 'CareSuite External' option if prompted. Make sure that the connection type is set as 'No connection' at the top left
3. Go to File – Open Product. At the Open Product window select your phone from the list (enter your mobile's RM-xxx code or name in the filter and it will show up if supported) – click Open

Now go to Programming – Recovery – at the recovery window un-check 'Automatic product selection' and 'Update automatically' boxes (if these are checked) – now click 'Update list' button – this will show phone's software/variant details as per downloaded files – now click 'Start' button – NCS will verify the firmware data package and finally will give an error pop up (because we have not connected the phone still)
5. Switch off the phone and take out it's battery – connect USB data cable with the computer (not with the phone) – now you have to do following steps in the given sequence and as quickly as possible –

(a) Connect data cable with the phone
(b) Insert the battery in phone and then
(c) Click Retry button at the NCS error box – if NCS does not recognize the phone still then press and hold phone's power button until NCS detects it

If everything goes right NCS will start flashing the phone. However if the process does not start (NCS gives error again), don't worry, repeat 5(a) (b) and (c) quickly again and again until NCS starts the flashing process. Once started, wait for the process to complete (it should take 10-20 minutes depending upon the phone model) – NCS will notify you when finished – done! your old security code is gone, enjoy your unlocked phone in a brand new state with default security code (12345)

This is because the security code cannot be reset by flashing the phone in working condition rather it can only be done by 'Dead phone' flashing (recovery mode as described above).

Note – Unfortunately NCS does not support all Nokia phones. You can also use Phoenix Service Software instead of NCS for the same purpose (described in this post) – Phoenix also supports Dead phone USB flashing.
